Ansted, WV

David Keith Scarbrough Sr., affectionately known as "Big Dave," passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on April 15th, 2025, in Ansted, West Virginia.

Born on May 1st, 1937, in Mossy, West Virginia, David was the beloved son of Vinton Scarbrough and Daisy Stover Scarbrough. He proudly served in the U.S. Army before embarking on a fulfilling career as a surface miner and rock drill operator. On August 15th, 1959, he married Mary Sue Coleman, with whom he shared many wonderful years until her passing.

David is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Sue Coleman Scarbrough (October 7th, 2020), his son Michael Scarbrough (Cynthia Ward Scarbrough -surviving), his sister Marcella Wriston, and brothers Phillip, Jerry, and Dennis Scarbrough.

David was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness. He is survived by his children: Michelle Scarbrough Nuckels (Allen Nuckels), David Scarbrough Jr., (Sandra Canterbury Scarbrough), and Darrell Scarbrough (companion Gabi Bobinski), grandchildren: Brittany Drennen, Lisa Scarbrough Richmond, Tara Foster, Dustin Nuckels, Tiffany Scarbrough Van Meter, and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Jimmy, Arthur, and Donald Scarbrough, sister Pauline Nelson, dear friend Teeney Meadows, and a host of nieces and nephews. The family would like to send thanks to special friends Vic, Johnny, Roger, and other friends and neighbors that frequently visited David.

David was known for his generous spirit and welcoming nature; he never met a stranger. He had a passion for car collecting, mowing his lawn, and storytelling. David was not only a father figure to his own children, but to numerous nephews and other young men in the community. There wasn’t a day that went by that his driveway was free of a friend’s vehicle. He welcomed all with open arms. A member of the First Brethren Church in Oak Hill, he was also a long-time donor to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and various veteran organizations.

A funeral service will be held at High Lawn Funeral Home in Oak Hill, West Virginia, at 2 PM on April 19th, with family visitation beginning at 1:30 PM. The service will be provided by Mike Meadows. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.

David was a true car enthusiast and always willing to lend a helping hand, earning the affection of all who knew him. Behind a loud booming voice and rough and tumble exterior lived a kind heart. As we bid farewell, we honor his legacy of grit and generosity. Though he may have left this world, his indomitable spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. David was a force to be reckoned with, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Pallbearers will be Allen Nuckels, Dustin Nuckels, Roger VanSickle, Dodie Roat, Vic Barton, & Kenneth Scarbrough.
