Lois Jean Hayes, 80, of Beckley, West Virginia, passed away in Beckley on June 16, 2023 after a long illness. Lois was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 5, 1942 and after living abroad, settled in Beckley with her husband to raise her two children. Lois was a generous and loving soul. She was an avid gardener and also loved taking photographs, going on picnics, taking spring wildflower hikes, traveling to places new and familiar, joining outings with work friends, and spending time with her family at their Greenbrier County farm. She was sometimes known for playing a practical joke or two. After her children were grown, Lois worked for many years as a secretary for the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation assisting those with disabilities. She also volunteered at local schools with disadvantaged youth. Lois was a member of Beckley Community United Methodist Church.
Lois was preceded in death by her father, Louis Vamos, her mother, Josephine Vamos Podvojski, and her stepfather Steve Podvojski. Lois is survived by her husband of 56 years, Phil Hayes, her son Derik Hayes of Beckley, her daughter Tanya Godfrey and her husband Chris Godfrey of Beckley, brother-in-law Victor Hayes and his wife Kathleen of Ringgold, Georgia, niece Melissa Peeples (Thomas) of Thomasville, Georgia, nephews Clint Hayes (Melissa) of Ringgold, Georgia, Scott Hayes (Kim) of Cleveland, Tennessee, Todd Trent (Robin) of Hampton, Georgia, cousin Jean Ann McDaniel of Summerfield, Florida, and cherished friends, Rebecca Cook of Beckley, and Rebecca Childers Abbott of Cleveland, Tennessee.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 1:30 p.m.at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, West Virginia, officiated by her brother-in-law, Victor Hayes, with arrangements made by Melton's Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Beckley Community United Methodist Church.
