Mrs. Margaret Louise Matthew passed away June 28, 2024, after a short illness, at the age of 98.

 

Mrs. Matthew was born May 12, 1926 in North Beckley, WV. The daughter of William and Virginia Owens, she was the oldest of seven children. Margaret grew up in Beckley and joined North Beckley Baptist Church at a very young age and subsequently became a life-long member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the choir, usher board and various other positions during the many years of her membership at Mt. Zion. Margaret came to Christ at an early age and was a devoted Christian.

 

Mrs. Matthew was a graduate of Dubois High School Class of 1945. Following high school, Margaret and her husband enjoyed traveling to more than thirty-nine states attending The National Baptist Convention Annual Sessions as well as attending Masonic and Eastern Star Annual Sessions.

 

Mrs. Matthew, in addition to her church activities, was active in the WVBSC State Chorus, WVBSC Deacons Wives Auxiliary, New River Valley Ushers Federation, New River Women’s Convention, WVBSC Women’s Auxiliary and various other state convention activities. She was a dedicated member of other organizations, such as Queen Victoria Chapter #5 and Melvola Chapter #1 O.E.S., Dew Drop Court #1, Heroines of Jericho, recording secretary of the Rhododendron Grand Chapter O.E.S., National Grand Masonic Choir and other groups not named.

 

Mrs. Matthew, during her lifetime, found her greatest joy spending time with her grandchildren and pursuing her love of photography. 

 

Mrs. Matthew, in addition to her parents, was preceded in death by her husband Russell. She leaves to mourn a son. James (Colleen); two grandchildren Brian (Jada) and Nikki (Winston); six great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Owens; one sister, Doris (Thomas) Poore and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. 

 

Funeral service will be 12:00PM Sunday, July 14, 2024 at the Hilltop Baptist Center The Baptist Road, Hilltop with Rev. Keith Walker officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

 

Friends, while wearing masks and observing social distancing, may view and visit with the family one-hour prior.
